Happy FriYAY Team!
Kia Ora!! Well, what a whirlwind the last 7 days have been! From the excitement of overseas travel and getting through NZ customs without major bag searches of trail shoes and gels, to the nerves and anticipation of standing, finally, on the start line of Tarawera 50k Ultra. Race day comes and goes so quickly, etching in my mind one of the most incredible days I’ve experienced, the scenery, the forests, the trails, the checkpoints, the volunteers, the finish line, and of course, the buckled legs for days afterwards!
However, thanks to Mother Nature, Cyclone Gabrielle had been brewing and threw so much of the tail end of the trip into pandemonium and uncertainty. Flights cancelled and questions about the rescheduled flight, no accommodation available, where to eat, when will I make it home to my family? Everything in Auckland had been shut down, it is an experience so similar to Covid lockdowns. So I was stuck in a city being devastated by a cyclone.
During this time of uncertainty, all I want to do is be home with all the familiarity of life. The family, the pets, my home, a home cooked meal, my friends, having a good laugh with my Squad family, driving with the windows down in my car, the feeling of safety. We tend to take all of the simple things in life for granted, and whilst sometimes our lives feel dull & very routine, we are safe and happy within our worlds.
These last few days of being stranded in Auckland has allowed me plenty of time to be thankful and grateful for all the routines, familiarity and simple things in my life! I hope you can all take the time today to appreciate all that you have here in the safety of your homes, your lives and all that important to you.
Let's do This,
