Happy FriYAY Team!
I recently finished listening to a podcast with Lucy Charles-Barclay as the guest. Lucy is the current Female World Ironman Champion & record holder of the Kona Course. What a humble and down to earth human she is! Despite her British accent (LOL!) I could've listened to her speak all day, I found her story so interesting & gutsy. She is an athlete full of grit, determination and courage covering many years in sport.
Lucy comes from a swimming background, she is so good in fact that she has made a number of qualifying times to race for the UK at the Olympics in the 1500m freestyle. She also recently made the qualifying time for rowing!!! She declined these slots as her passion is in triathlon! I am confident there isn't many current female elite athletes that could qualify at the Olympics for a range of sports, and be crowned World Champion in another!
Lucy however, over the years in triathlon, has suffered from numerous injuries and stress fractures which have had her sidelined time and time again. And as some of us know, coming back from a stress fracture is not a short process, it months and months and strength work and rehab! However, not once did she loose sight of her drive to win Kona.
Lucy has won the IM 70.3 World Championship in 2021, the World Triathlon Long Course Championships in 2022 and has been 2nd at Kona for the previous 4 years. Each time being run down in the final 10kms. This year, she was the 1st female in the history of Kona, to lead from start to finish AND set a new course record along the way.
My take away from this podcast was the old saying, "If you fail, try, try again". If you keep believing, keep fighting for what you want and fully back yourself, then you can achieve anything you set out to. Lucy has overcome so much in her sporting life, and despite the incredible wins she has had, she has also cried many tears.
Whilst many elite athletes appear to be super human, it is those like Lucy who are so open & honest, down to earth and humble, giving us all the courage to follow our goals & dreams. Next time I find myself in a super tough training session or wanting more from myself, I will be drilling in to my Inner Lucy!!!
Let's Make it Happen,
