Happy FriYAY Team!
This week on Zwift, the Ironman crew have a workout called HWBTWTDWH. I was asked the other day, what on earth does that stand for!!
It stands for something which applies to 99% of the sporting population. Age groupers, recreational athletes, elite levels, Olympians. Of any sport, at any level that sets themselves a goal of any description.
There is very few gifted, or naturally talented athletes in the world. Even looking at the all-time greats like Micheal Phelps, Eluid Kipchoge, Jan Frodeno. They didn’t just show up at races, they didn’t just acquire their skill set, and couldn’t just flick on the mental game.
It took them all, hours, days, months and years to be the best in the world at their craft. Failures, pain, early mornings, inclement weather, so much more no one but them and their coaches know about.
We can’t just show up at training once a blue moon and expect to be doing PBs. None of us are that talented right.
Back in the day when I was racing at my fastest and my peak, people would so often say “Your so talented”. that was absotlue rubbish. I was the least talented athlete you could find. But I was always the hardest worker. Day after day, month after month, year after year. Darn hard work.
So when people say to me now, as a coach, that Mr X or Miss V are so talented, I shut that down immediately. No one ever achieved success on talent alone.
Hard Work Beats Talent When Talent Doesn't Work hard.
Keep on working, keep on striving, keep on believing and keep looking to so many incredible role models all around us who continue to bring out the best in each and one of us. Day after day, week after week, month after month.
