Happy FriYAY Team!
Hawaii Ironman 2024. The day Patrick Lange showed us he truly is the greatest Ironman in history.
I must admit, I am a HUGE Patrick fan and he was my tip to Win. Not only does he ride a Canyon :-) , but if anyone has ever seen him run, it is like poetry in motion. I could watch him run all day long! Last Sunday ,the 2024 Hawaii Ironman World Championships was one of those incredible days in triathlon history.
A new course swim record was set by AUSSIE Age Grouper Sam Askey-Doran in a time of 45:43 (which is 1:11/100), then we saw Sam Laidlow crushing a sub-4 hour bike split (something we thought impossible in Kona), and then... well, then watching it all unravel in spectacular fashion on the run.
But the real story? Patrick Lange. At 39, when most of the experts thought his best days were behind him, he put on an absolute clinical race. I've been watching Ironman Kona for many, many years now, and it is extremely rate to see someone execute a race plan so perfectly despite what was happening around him on the bike.
While everyone else was caught up in Laidlow's historic bike split, Lange just kept his cool, running his way to an incredible a 2:37 marathon, in brutal conditions and snagged his third Kona title with a course record of 7:35:53. Anyone who knows Ironman, and then knows Kona....that time is absolutely mind blowing!.
This is Patrick's 3rd win in Kona, each time he wins, he sets a new course record. He was up against so many of the young guns with all with cutting edge technology and aerodynamics, they had all the data and all the tools. But Patrick used his experience card and watched so many around him blow up. Races like this prove that it is all about executing YOUR race, sticking to YOUR race plan and 100% backing yourself.
But here's what hit me hardest: watching Lange cross that finish line, pointing to the sky for his late mother with tears streaming down his face... that's what this sport is all about.
