Happy FriYAY Team!
Gosh I love this time of the racing year when there is events on every weekend! We really are booked up all the way through to June now :-)
With so much racing happening, NOW is the time to be reading Athlete Briefings and becoming familiar with the current Race Rules. Whilst most run events (road & trail) do have race rules, these are usually fairly straight forward, but it is still important to do your due-diligence and read through the rules & course maps!
This is YOUR responsibility, there is no excuses for not knowing the Race Rules. And if in doubt, ask the friendly TOs at your event, they are there to help you and make your event enjoyable!
Keep in mind those racing triathlon, there currently is 3 sets of rules so you will need to ensure you are reading the correct one for your event!
Aus Tri have the Aus Tri Rules, so this will be for any races or events run or sanctioned by Aus Tri.
Ironman rules is any event run by Ironman.
This is where it gets tricky as events like Mooloolaba are run by Ironman however use the Aus Tri rules because it is a World Champs qualifying event!
Then there is the World Triathlon Corporation rules for any races held under the WT Corp banner.
Confused....yeap...it is....therefore it is SO important to make sure in any correspondence you receive as your athlete briefing, you do take the time to read through the rules because these rules to have variations!
The latest updates to the Ironman race rules, effective of 17th March 2025 can be found on the Ironman Website under Official Competition Rules. The IM three race rules which would affect us the most include and bring IM inline with WTC are:
1) Blue Card IM Rule violation (ie drafting) is now a 3 min time penalty. With a Blue Card 70.3 Rule violation, it is now a 2 min time penalty.
2) Front end water bottles & hydration systems have been updated. There is not a limit to the number of water bottles carried on the front of the bicycle. However, there is a maximum volume capacity for any bottles and hydration systems carried on the front. This is now limited to a total combined maximum volume capacity of 2 liters (2000ml).
3) And thirdly, Aero bar extensions must not extend beyond the leading edge of the front wheel.
There is a number of other updates however these wont really affect us!
I am so excited for the upcoming few weeks of racing, all these few months and training & preparation are all about to pay dividends! It doesn't take much to read the rules, and it could save you wasted time in penalty boxes or discussions with race Referees!
Yes, YOU are stronger than YOU think.
