Happy FriYAY Team!
Ironman triathlon. It is an absolute beast. In my time doing Ironman racing, I completed 8, including 2 x Kona Ironman World Championships when it was via qualification only. The essence of age group racing at Port Mac has continued to enrich lives and bring out the best in so many athletes. The township comes alive, and that red carpet finish line is so special because it represents an accumulation of effort, pain, training, sacrifices, and the mental grit that has gone into the entire journey. I always call Ironman race day a celebration of all the hard work!
Ironman pushes the human body and mind to their absolute limits across three demanding endurance disciplines. A 3.8km swim. A 180km ride. Then a 42.2km marathon.
Ironman is so incredibly complex, its not just training more kms than you drive each week, there is the complexity of energy demands. There is the cumulative fatigue which taxes different muscle groups and energy systems over the swim & bikeā¦..so by the time they get to the marathon, the body is already exhausted, making every single step of the marathon a battle of will. It is about mental, physical and emotional toughness for relentless hour after hour after hour.
Over the years, Port Mac has thrown perfect conditions, windy conditions, torrential rain, and there has been years when all these environmental factors happened in one day! Just another element Ironman athletes must contend with.
After months of training, and then beyond physical readiness, Ironman tests your resilience, especially during the late stages. It dares you to rebuild yourself before that finish line. A very short moment in life that will bring you to tears of pride for the rest of your life.
So on Sunday, take the time to give some energy & positive vibes for Bangers, Pete & Matty B as they all take on the Port Mac Ironman once again. This year we also have Bretty doing his maiden 70.3 event. We have all witnessed the boys over recent month, they are the1st in the water at the pool, have the longest sets on the board at track, be out until lunchtime on Sunday after their mammoth brick sessions, they make no excuse, they just get on with the job. Sunday is their time to Shine. Ironman is such a roller coaster, and despite the highs and the lows, the boys are all fired up and ready to put in their best efforts. Regardless of what the day brings, we are all so proud of them.
Ironman is not only the hardest sporting event in the world, but it will also prove to anyone who tackles it, that Anything Is Possible.
YOU are strong than YOU think,
