Happy FriYAY Team!
Each year I love watching the Tour de France. I am in total awe of these incredible athletes, even more so this year given I have more of an understanding of the terrain & elevations are really like.
These high performance of athletes in the Tour de France are a result of a finely tuned balance of physical conditioning, strategic planning, and team coordination. These riders train for years to develop the endurance, power, and recovery capacity needed to compete in a grueling 21-stage race that spans over 3,000 kilometers. Advances in sports science—such as real-time performance tracking, aerodynamic testing, and individualized data analytics—have further elevated rider performance. These athletes operate near the limits of human endurance, I would actually love to know their av watts, speed & Heart Rates across the varied terrain, from flat sprints to high mountain passes.
Team tactics play a crucial role, with domestiques shielding leaders from wind, pacing them up climbs, and controlling the peloton's tempo. Riders also benefit from innovations in equipment, including lightweight bikes, electronic shifting, and optimized tire pressure systems, all contributing to efficiency and speed. The result is a competition where marginal gains can make the difference between winning the yellow jersey and finishing off the podium.
As age group athletes, we have to balance training with jobs, families, and other responsibilities and as a result, we train fewer hours per week without the numerous sporting experts and recovery tools. Tour riders push their bodies to the limits of human performance, whereas age group riders tend to focus on personal goals with no financial gains, personal improvement, fitness, and the enjoyment of competition.
Despite these vast differences, both groups of athletes share a deep passion for the sport, team spirit and cohesion, and a commitment to pushing their own limits within their respective contexts. Whilst we won't be wearing the Yellow Jersey, we still have so much to strive towards.
YOU are stronger than YOU think,
