Happy FriYAY Team!

The people have spoken. And their voices have been heard.

When ironman announced its new Kona Qualification system back in early July, the concept of a performance-based qualifying system seemed to make sense and in theory, it would work. Just over a third of the way into the 2026 qualification process for Kona though, Ironman has decided to make significant changes the system to ensure more women earn qualifying slots in the “performance pool” of those most competitive athletes. Ironman has noted that approximately 96% of performance pool slots are going to men, and 4% to women.

The recent decision by Ironman to overturn its unified performance pool and once again separate qualification pathways for men and women, has been met with overwhelming relief and gratitude across the triathlon community. For many female athletes, the combined pool felt like a step backward — one that risked diminishing visibility, competitive fairness, and the hard-earned progress toward true equity in the sport. This reversal restores a system that recognizes the unique dynamics of women’s racing and ensures that female athletes have access to qualification opportunities that reflect their performance relative to their own competitive field.

Women throughout the sport have voiced appreciation for Ironman’s willingness to listen. It’s not always easy for major organizations to walk back a decision, especially one tied to data-driven policy changes. Yet Ironman’s responsiveness demonstrated a genuine respect for athlete feedback. By acknowledging the concerns raised by professionals and age-groupers alike, the organization showed that it values the lived experiences of the women who make up such a vital part of the global triathlon community.

More than just a policy adjustment, this change represents a reaffirmation of Ironman’s commitment to supporting women in endurance sport. Athletes are hopeful that this collaborative spirit will continue, shaping future decisions in ways that elevate fairness, foster inclusivity, and keep the sport growing in the right direction. For both men and women.

YOU are stronger than YOU think,

Alli
