Happy FriYAY Team!
This Sunday, the triathlon community will once again gather for the Gold Coast Triathlon - Luke Harrop Memorial—an event that holds a special place on the national calendar and in the hearts of many. I can still remember where I was when word filtered through Luke had been hit and was not expected to survive. A very sad few days.
While this event brings together athletes of all levels to test themselves across swim, bike, and run, its significance runs far deeper than race day performances and finishing times. It is a moment where the community pauses, reflects, and reconnects with what truly binds us together.
At the centre of this event is the memory of Luke Harrop, a shining star in the triathlon world whose legacy continues to inspire generations of athletes. Luke’s passion, talent, and spirit are remembered not only through this memorial race, but through the way the community shows up each year—supporting one another, sharing stories, and honouring his contribution to the sport we all love.
Events like this, serve as a powerful reminder that triathlon is about much more than competition. Yes, we train, we race, and we strive for personal bests—but equally important are the friendships formed on early morning rides, the encouragement shared on the run course, and the collective energy of squads and a community that looks out for one another. It is in these shared experiences that the true value of sport is found.
As athletes line up on Sunday, whether chasing podiums or simply aiming to finish strong, they do so as part of something bigger. The Gold Coast Triathlon is not just a race—it is a celebration of community, resilience, remembrance, and the enduring impact one individual can have on an entire sport.
Live Boldly,
