The Tough Side of Sport — And the Comeback
Sport isn’t always about the finish lines, PBs and celebrations. Sometimes, despite months of hard work, commitment and sacrifice, we are faced with the part of sport that nobody wants — injury, setbacks and difficult decisions.
Last weekend, Trinny, and our dear squad friend Sheree (Previous MSGolder & now Coach Erin's Ultra marathoner) lined up for their A races after months of dedicated training, only to have their races come to an unexpected end due to injuries. Both were forced to DNF when continuing simply wasn’t an option.
Those moments are incredibly tough — not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. There can be disappointment, frustration and that horrible feeling of “What if?” There can be a fear of failure, of letting people down, or of not fulfilling the goals we have worked so hard towards. When you have invested so much of yourself into a race, walking away before the finish line can feel devastating.
But this is sport. And it sometimes works in ways we do not always understand.
Even the very best in the world experience the roller coaster. Jonas and Tadej have both experienced major setbacks through cycling crashes and broken bones. Injury and disappointment don't discriminate — they happen to athletes at every level, including the very best on the planet.
What defines us as athletes isn’t whether everything goes perfectly. It’s how we respond when it doesn’t.
The real strength comes from picking up the pieces, accepting what has happened, giving the body and mind the time they need to recover, and then finding the courage to start again. The comeback may not be immediate, and it may not look exactly like the original plan, but there is enormous strength in rebuilding.
Trinny and Sheree — these DNFs are absolutely not failures. They are simply another chapter in your sporting journeys. They are stepping stones, lessons and experiences that will ultimately make you stronger athletes and, more importantly, stronger people.
This is what Live Boldly is really about.
It isn’t about always getting the outcome we want. It’s about having the courage to keep showing up, even when the path ahead looks different from the one we planned.
Rest. Recover. Reset. Rebuild. The comeback will come.
And when it does, you’ll be stronger for everything you’ve been through.
The race didn’t end your journey. It simply started a new chapter.
Live Boldly,
Coach Alli |
